Prince Rupert  - Wrangell

(CYPR - PAWG)

VFR# 5

One of the greatest fishing areas for Pacific Salmon this flight not only offers some pretty good scenery but some navigational challenges as well.

For today's flight you'll be departing Prince Rupert near the British Columbia and Alaska border on a semi circle flight east landing NE of Ketchikan at Wrangell Alaska.

For this flight we strongly suggest the Caravan or something of this calibre to give your flight some atmosphere...candles and mood music will also work.

But before you depart, you should check out the YPR Weather first.

You will be departing Prince Rupert (CYPR) to the NE.  You want to take a HDG of 342 from the PR [218.0] NDB for 44 NM and intercept the ANN [117.10] VOR, 46 DME on the 70 radial which will bring you directly over the North Channel of the Salmon River.

Follow this Channel north for about 60 NM to Stewart (CZST) at the Portland Canal at the Salmon River junction.

Stewart is nothing more than a sleepy little spot on the British Columbia/Alaska border sharing this spot on the map with Hyder Alaska.  Rumor has it that the four teens in Stewart throw stones at the four kids Hyder every Saturday night.

Now if you're in the mood for something to do while in Stewart or should the weather bog you down, I'd suggest a night at the Ripley Creek Inn or Lunch at the Bitter Creek Cafe if you have hankering for some fresh Salmon and a few pints.  Afterwards a brisk 6 step walk over to the Toastworks, Stewarts museum on everything toast is a must...the Artvark will appreciate this fine collection of culinary antiquities.

Leaving Stewart we're going to follow the runway HDG of 360 degrees for about 10 nm, then turn left at the "wall" as depicted on the picture at the left.  You will turn on a HDG of 317 for another 8 NM. Your altitude at this point should be 7,500' and you're climbing for 8,500' now left down to a HDG of 283 and follow this for about 47.2 NM to Bronson Creek.  Bronson Creek (CAB5) is located at 67.2 NM mark on the LVD 54 [116.50] radial and 98.6 NM on the ANN 344 radial [117.10].

Runway 21 is the "only" runway and the best approach from the South East along the Stikine River.  Broson Creek is a mining community near Mount Johnny on the Stikine River. There have been many aircraft incidents over the years and a number of historic aircraft lost including a Norseman and a Bristol 170 so please be careful and don't scratch the paint.

Leaving Bronson Creek we'll be heading west following the river for about 24 NM till we intersect the LVD [115.50] 43 radial then follow the left fork of the river west for another 20 NM or so until it opens up into a large channel/basin. You can set your NDB to RGL [206.0] which is Wrangell (PAWG) our final destination.  Upon arrival we've arranged for a round of golf over at the Muskeg Meadows Golf Course (mosquitoes will thank you), and dinner at the Waterfront Grill (more salmon).  If your in a hurry stop by Bob's IGA or Jitterbugs Espresso to Go for something to stuff in your cupholder.

We hope you enjoy this flight, it's not very difficult if you follow the instructions.
